Dramedy. (4 pages)

PREMISE:
A youth group goes to a senior home to sing Christmas carols, but Robby struggles to find the joy in singing.

TOPIC:
Serving.

SCRIPTURE:
Psalm 100:1-2.

CHARACTERS (LINE COUNT) DESCRIPTION:
( 4) NURSE –
( 2) VALERIE – teen leader of the youth group
(10) ROBBY – not excited to be there
( 5) JOSH – very excited, but totally tone deaf
( 0) EXTRAS – two or three more youth

PROPS:
Nurse scrubs, device with stylist, hum-a-zoo.

SCRIPT: lobby in a senior home.

(Nurse enters stage right, busy entering notes in her device, when a youth group enters stage left. Josh grins from ear to ear, while Robby does not look happy to be there at all. Valerie pushes her way to the front of the group to approach the nurse.)

NURSE:
Hi, welcome to Pine Grove’s Senior Home. Are you all here to visit someone special?

VALERIE:
We’re the youth group from Pine Valley Church. Someone was supposed to contact you about us. We want to go from room to room, singing Christmas carols.

NURSE:
Oh, yes. We were told to expect you. Well, have fun. I’d recommend starting with the rooms down this hallway, here.

JOSH:
This is going to be fun!

ROBBY:
Seriously? THIS is the fun-team-building-thing you hyped up? Was this Pastor John’s idea, or yours?

VALERIE:
Come on. We’re here to serve these people- joyfully!

ROBBY:
I am not feeling joyful.

(The group exits stage right. While offstage, they sing verse 1 of “Joy to the World”, and it’s not good. Josh is totally tone deaf, besides being exuberantly loud.)

GROUP’S VOICES:
(singing)
“Joy to the world! The Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing”

(Nurse can’t help but smile and nod along. When the song is done, the group reenters.)

JOSH:
That was so good!

(Nurse smiles, nods, then leaves stage right to “the same room” [area] that the teens just left. Robby points to the nurse.)

ROBBY:
That was terrible. See, she’s going in there to make sure those people are okay. And we must have been really bad. Did you not notice? They were crying?

VALERIE:
Not feeling joyful yet, Robby? You’ll get there.

ROBBY:
Why? You praying for me? You should be praying that we start sounding better.

(Group exits stage right in a slightly different spot to sing “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” verse 1. It’s still really bad.)

GROUP’S VOICES:
(singing)
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new born King,
peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!"
Joyful, all ye nations rise,
join the triumph of the skies;
with th’ angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new born King!"

(Group reenters. Josh shakes his head sorrowfully embarrassed.)

ROBBY:
They were crying again! We must sound way worse than I thought!

JOSH:
I don’t know. Some of them were singing along.

ROBBY:
I’m shocked they could even recognize the song. Josh, why are you singing so loudly?

JOSH:
Some of them might be deaf.

ROBBY:
If they weren’t before, they might be now.

(Nurse now reenters and approaches the group.)

NURSE:
Excuse me. I just have to tell you-

ROBBY:
Oh-oh. Here it comes. The truth. What? They all want us to leave and never come back? Is that why some of them are giving us money and candy?

NURSE:
Actually, they’re all very happy you’re here. Most don’t ever get visitors.

VALERIE & OTHER GIRL/S:
(melting)
Awwww.

ROBBY:
Ugh. Okay, everyone, sorry for my bad attitude. Let’s keep going! Now I’m praying that these people will feel the joy! Wait, Josh, what’s that in your pocket?

JOSH:
A hum-a-zoo.

ROBBY:
You should use that! I bet it will sound great!

(Josh is exited to pull out the hum-a-zoo. They exit stage right to sing “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee” verse 1. It’s still bad, with the exception that the hum-a-zoo adds a new dynamic.)

GROUP’S VOICES:
(singing)
“Joyful, joyful, we adore You,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flow'rs before You,
Op'ning to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!”
