SCENE 1: Chaya’s house, at lower stage left
(Mary walks through the room which has a table and two chairs. As she answers the “yoohoo” coming from the door, Abigail boldly enters. Mary looks concerned, but quickly smiles.)
ABIGAIL:
Mary! Is your mother home?
MARY:
Abigail, hello. Please- come in.
(Chaya enters from inside the house. While talking, Abigail just takes it upon herself to sit down at the table. As Mary stands behind Abigail, she shrugs helplessly to her mother, Chaya, who quickly looks back to Abigail and strains out a smile.)
ABIGAIL:
Chaya, how are things? Congratulations to Mary on the engagement to Joseph. Quite a fine, young-ish man. Very godly. So I hear. But tell me, any idea when Mary and Joseph will be married?
CHAYA:
No. As usual, it will be when Joseph sees that the house he is preparing for them- is ready. He’s not rich, as you know, but at least he is a carpenter, so, I suppose that should be helpful.
(wanting to change the topic)
How are things with you?
ABIGAIL:
Enough about me! But did you hear about Talia’s daughter? She was caught in adultery. Her husband and the men of the city dragged her out into a field and stoned her. On the spot.
(Mary looks worried, and touches her stomach, then thinks of something to say. She shuffles over to Abigail’s face.)
MARY:
What about the man? He was also adulterous.
ABIGAIL:
Mary, you are very mature for your age, but you have so much to learn. Just keep on being an upright woman, and you’ll do fine.
(Mary goes to stand behind Abigail again, trying to hide her tears, and regain composure.)
ABIGAIL:
Well, you women are no fun today.
CHAYA:
So sorry, Abigail. We- ah- we were busy sorting through items- that- ah- Mary can take with her once they are married.
(Mary shrugs at Chaya again, who strains out a smile. Mary makes prayerful hands and looks up to God.)
ABIGAIL:
Well, I’m sure that you cannot wait for little grandchildren to come along. Hopefully that will happen soon enough. Nothing like having many grandchildren, swarming all around you. With that lovely thought, and not the thought of adultery and being stoned to death, I shall be on my way. Shalom for now.
(Abigail exits. Mary collapses into the vacated chair.)
MARY:
I was praying that she would leave.
CHAYA:
Mary! I know, she can be a bit much. Now- back to what we were discussing. What will we do? What will YOU do? Your father wants nothing to do with you, right now! And- Joseph was very angry, although he hid it quite well. But- how could you expect him to believe such a story? You pregnant- by the Blessed One’s Spirit? I have to be honest here- I also simply do not believe you.
MARY:
Mother, we’ve heard the prophecies. All of Israel keeps waiting for our Messiah. I don’t know. How else would you expect God to do this thing?
CHAYA:
Am I one to think like- the Blessed One?
(pointing to heaven)
But- if I were to- I would simply bless a woman who was already married, and was already with child.
MARY:
Then that child would not at all be God’s Son. You mean to say that you cannot believe that God could do such a miracle?
(Chaya shrugs. Mary things, then continues.)
MARY:
Well, the angel also told me that Father’s relative Elizabeth is pregnant. Do you believe THAT?
CHAYA:
Elizabeth is so much older than me. So, I suppose if I saw that old woman, who is so way past her prime of life, to be pregnant, then maybe I could believe you were carrying the Messiah. Maybe!
MARY:
Do you think Joseph will have me stoned? He was very upset.
CHAYA:
No, even though he isn’t rich, Joseph is a good man. He said that he was going to figure out a way to manage this- without you getting hurt.
MARY:
But, breaking off the engagement, will still not look good. That is still considered as a divorce. And then what? I’ll be raising- God’s Son- all by myself? I somehow doubt that God would want His Son to be raised illegitimately.
CHAYA:
You are determined to stick with this story. I’ll give you that. Meanwhile, we still need to come up with a plan. Oh, perhaps He will bless you with a rich husband who will not care about the fact that you are divorced and with a Child.
MARY:
Mother! I do not need to be rich, in order to be happy. There just has to be love- the Lord God’s love. And I just want this all to somehow work out. I have no choice but to trust God in all of this. And, so, the Lord God must have a plan.
CHAYA:
Ah, well then, while -He- is taking His time thinking up some kind of plan, we need to so some quick thinking. And I think, you need to go somewhere else. Maybe your father’s relative, Elizabeth, would have some ideas.
MARY:
I would like to see her. In fact, I will go and pack, right now.
SCENE 2: Herod’s throne, at lower stage right
(Herod paces the floor, when Guard enters with a bow.)
GUARD:
Long live King Herod the Great! As you requested! Annas, your priest- the priest you have summoned, has arrived.
(Sitting down, Herod motions with a hand that Annas may enter. Annas enters without bowing, and stands very proudly.)
ANNAS:
You requested to meet with me? King- Herod.
HEROD:
Your help will be appreciated, and will not go unrewarded- if- it is pleasing to me.
ANNAS:
And just why would I work with you? YOU- an illegitimate king? You are not from the lineage of king David. In fact, you are only half Jewish. Your father’s favor with Julius Caesar got him the appointment as Judea’s governor. And then, imagine our surprise when he appointed you, his son, as governor of Galilee. You were only named “King of the Jews” by the Roman Senate!
HEROD:
Officially named King of the Jews. And I legitimately conquered the nation of Israel to secure my absolute rule. Do you- plan on overthrowing the Roman Empire?
ANNAS:
Do you plan on putting me to death, now?
HEROD:
On the contrary. I like your determination and honesty. And, as I already told you, your help will be well rewarded.
(Annas straightens up again with a sigh of resolve.)
HEROD:
Do you remember that priest from the Abijahs? It was during the Day of Atonement.
ANNAS:
Zacharias? He was the priest who won the lotto this year to enter the Holy of Holies.
HEROD:
Yes. I thought that since Zacharias was a holy man, he would put in a good word for me. As you should know, I like to pay homage to all possible gods. And I do not look for you to lecture me on exactly how many gods there are. Keep in mind, I only want you to counsel me on matters of my choosing.
ANNAS:
And just what is the counsel that you seek?
HEROD:
I heard that this priest, Zacharias, went dumb after his task in the temple. Should I be concerned? I was unable to get any facts from him as to how it went in that- Holy of Holies- ritual.
ANNAS:
Zacharias was fortunate to come out alive. While he seems to be obedient to God, fervently so- and his wife, Elizabeth, is from the daughters of Aaron- he and his wife are childless. And they are so old, they are now beyond all hope. Therefore, we view this as a curse- that God is not pleased with them for whatever reason. That is why we tie a rope around the waist of any priest who is to go before- the Holy of Holies. If any priest should fall down dead, and many do, because of some unrighteousness or another, we have a way to pull them out, otherwise, we would also fall down dead, on the spot.
HEROD:
Very strange. And I care not about those details. All I want to know is- was this man able to put in a good word for me.
ANNAS:
As you said, when he came out, he was unable to say anything. And apparently, he still cannot speak.
HEROD:
Should I be worried about your God?
ANNAS:
(thinking, and then...)
Since it has been over 300 years of not hearing from God, I will venture to say that things will go well for you. That is, unless and until you would do anything against Israel. God is known to take vengeance on our behalf. And while we long for sovereignty, here you are, the king of Israel. Maybe we CAN work together.
HEROD:
As long as there aren’t any threats to my throne, we will know that this priest, Zacharias, made successful petitions on my behalf. And to make sure that your God remains on my side, I would like you to keep me posted on anything that could disrupt this arrangement.
(Annas hesitantly gives a little bow to Herod.)
SCENE 3: Chaya’s house, at lower stage left
(Joseph’s voice can be heard calling at the door. Chaya comes from another room in the house to go to the door.)
JOSEPH’S VOICE:
Mary? Mary!
CHAYA:
Oh. Joseph. It’s you?
JOSEPH’S VOICE:
May I enter? Please! I’ve had a change of heart.
(Chaya begins to turn away, but stops.)
CHAYA:
Very well. Come in. And just what do you mean by that? This- change of heart?
(Joseph enters.)
JOSEPH:
We are to be married. And so, I must speak with her.
(Chaya motions for Joseph to sit down. Chaya remains standing and begins to pace, as she lectures.)
CHAYA:
Why the change of heart? Do you just- suddenly feel that much love, and suddenly- you do not care what people will say?
JOSEPH:
An angel visited me last night, and gave me a message-
CHAYA:
Ohhhhh, an angel told you, so therefore you must!
(Chaya stops pacing on the spot to glare at Joseph.)
CHAYA:
So- you do NOT love her. Well, what if I told you that Mary did not love you anymore, and did not want to marry you?!
JOSEPH:
I know that would not be true. Mary and I both share the same love for our Lord God.
CHAYA:
But what about love for each other?
JOSEPH:
I already love her. I have always loved. Even before I met her.
CHAYA:
Ha! Impossible. No wonder you have remained without a wife for so many years. Who would want to marry such a strange man.
JOSEPH:
God tells us to love everyone. Therefore, I love everyone, whether I know them or not. And as for my intended wife, I choose to love her as my wife. Mary chose to love me as her husband. And together, we will work on loving each other always.
CHAYA:
But, what about feelings for one another?
JOSEPH:
Feelings can so easily come and go. They are not reliable. What is constant and sure- is God’s love.
CHAYA:
I suppose that sounds logical.
JOSEPH:
So, may I speak with Mary?
CHAYA:
Oh, she is not here. Since you abandoned her, she went to visit her relative, Elizabeth.
JOSEPH:
Then, I will send a message there, asking her to return at once.
(Joseph gets up to go, but Chaya’s comment stops him.)
CHAYA:
Soon, it will be more and more obvious that Mary is with child.
JOSEPH:
I understand. I am well aware. And so, I am fervently praying that God will provide protection, and give us some guidance as to what to do. And when! So, I am confident that God is well aware- that timing is critical. So- we have no choice but to trust Him in all of this.
CHAYA:
Ha! You sound just like Mary!
JOSEPH:
I am actually very pleased to hear that.
(Joseph ponders while nodding, then waves and rushes away. Chaya throws up bewildered hands and then exits.)
SCENE 4: Herod’s throne, at lower stage right
(Herod stands at ease, arms behind his back, staring off into the distance, when Annas enters. Herod spins around.)
HEROD:
I expected a report of that priest named Zacharias, as soon as you heard anything.
ANNAS:
I only just received news today, dropped everything, and came here immediately. Zacharias has been mute- right up until now.
HEROD:
What changed? And- what were his first words?
ANNAS:
Him and his wife, Elizabeth, just had a baby boy. Apparently, Zacharias wrote down the name of the boy, which will be John-
HEROD:
I care not. I doubt there will ever be any further interactions between him and my family. Now- what were his first words?
ANNAS:
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel!
HEROD:
I don’t much care for that, either.
ANNAS:
You must understand, those were his first words. Apparently, an angel visited Zacharias while he was in the Holy of Holies. This angel said, and I quote, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David His servant—"
HEROD:
Why do you stop?
ANNAS:
Ah- the angel told Zacharias that they would have a son, named John, who would be called the prophet of the Most High, who would go on before the Lord to prepare His ways- to make ready a people- prepared for the Lord.
HEROD:
Do help me understand. A prophet to prepare the people for what- exactly?
ANNAS:
More like- for whom. I suspect it means that our Messiah will be coming soon.
HEROD:
But what does this mean for my kingdom? Should I be concerned?
(Herod stops when he sees Guard enters with a slight bow.)
GUARD:
Long live King Herod the Great! Caesar Augustus- has sent to us a messenger, who insists that he must deliver this message into your hands, personally, and immediately.
(Herod puts up a halt hand to the Guard as he quickly gives Annas directions.)
HEROD:
I need you to look through your scriptures and find out everything you can about this- so-called-Messiah.
ANNAS:
There are many, many scrolls-
HEROD:
Are you not a priest who knows the scriptures?
ANNAS:
I am a Sadducee. We recognize only the written Torah. Which are the words of Moses.
HEROD:
But there are other scrolls written by other prophets?
ANNAS:
Yes. Quite a few of them- with many words-
HEROD:
With prophecies?
ANNAS:
Well, yes, but-
HEROD:
But what are the prophecies contained in those writings?
ANNAS:
I would have to read them all, and- there are a lot- and- I do not work for you.
HEROD:
But your group does accommodate to Roman rule and Hellenistic culture, as it allows you to maintain your privileged positions and control over the Temple operations. Who do you think built that magnificent temple here in Jerusalem in the first place? Me. Paid for by the taxes that I collect from the people. And if other nations were not so prejudiced against Israel, it would be considered one of the world’s seven wonders. And do not forget, I am the king. And I did convert to Judaism. So, I can make your life extremely uncomfortable. Or, imagine this, if you work WITH me, there will be a comparable benefit. Someday, would you not desire to be high priest?
(This captures Annas’ intrigue, but then shakes it off.)
ANNAS:
That’s impossible- While I’m from a legitimate priestly family, that position is God-ordained, until death, and then- that position passes along to the son-
HEROD:
And yet- it is more than possible. Things change. As king, I have ties with the Roman governor Quirinius, who owes me a few favors, so certain arrangements can be made. As long as you work WITH me. Now, as soon as you have understanding on this matter of the Messiah, bring that information to me at once.
ANNAS:
Very well. But I also expect this favor to include my family.
(As Annas exits, Herod nods at Guard, and Messenger swoops in and holds out an envelope to Herod with a bow. The envelope has a red seal on it, which Herod carefully inspects, before opening it with some trepidation. Herod quickly reads the message, and with his head still down, he flicks his hand for the Messenger to leave. Herod quickly looks up at the Guard.)
HEROD:
You. Stay here. Caesar Augustus has issued a decree. A census will be taken of all the inhabited earth. Everyone must return to their own city and be registered there.
(dryly to himself)
No doubt for bragging rights. Anyway-
(to Guard)
Have my scribes quickly make copies of this edict, and then have messengers spread the word throughout my kingdom. This is apparently urgent.
(Herod holds out the letter for Guard to take before exiting.)
SCENE 5: Chaya’s house, at lower stage left
(Joseph’s voice can be heard calling at the door. Chaya comes from another room in the house to go to the door.)
JOSEPH’S VOICE:
Mary? Mary! Has Mary returned yet?
CHAYA:
(to herself)
Again? This man does not give up.
(Mary enters and calls out.)
MARY:
Joseph? Joseph, come in. Yes, I have returned.
CHAYA:
(aside to Mary)
I hope you are going to put this man in his place!
(Chaya steps aside and watches closely and skeptically. Mary gasps incredibly, then turns to Joseph, who takes her hands in his, and looks intently into her eyes.)
JOSEPH:
Mary! I’m so sorry. I was wrong to doubt. Please forgive me.

(Chaya balks at the apology.)
MARY:
Of course I forgive you.
(Mary and Joseph smile awkwardly at one another. Chaya balks again.)
CHAYA:
Just like that? What sort of marriage are you two going to have, anyway?
MARY:
A good one. Because God will be at the center of it. While away, I was trying so hard to trust that God would work this all out.
CHAYA:
Well, there are still things to work out! You are going to start showing very soon, and people will do the math, and then they will gossip-
JOSEPH:
God has already worked out all those details. I just heard. Caesar Augustus has issued a decree, that a census be taken.
CHAYA:
How in the world does this help?
JOSEPH:
We are all to go to our own city and be registered there. Which means for me- for us- we are to go to Bethlehem.
MARY:
(sitting down, thinking)
That will be quite a journey.
JOSEPH:
It will require a bit of planning, but this is something that can wait until tomorrow. So- well- tell me about your visit with your relatives. Was it- helpful?
(Chaya collapses into the other chair with a bit of a groan.)
MARY:
Oh yes! It was so encouraging! Elizabeth shared with me how she looks to God, as well, and trusts that He has a purpose to carry out– all in His timing. All this while, they had almost given up all hope of ever having a child, and then to find out that their baby is to be a prophet, to prepare the way for our Messiah. And- imagine this, when I arrived, and we hugged, her unborn baby leapt within her! And then, even without me telling her, Elizabeth knew that I am carrying the Christ-child.
JOSEPH:
Amazing. And, how was her husband with all of this news?
MARY:
Now, try to imagine THIS. For the Day of Atonement this year, Zacharias won the lotto, out of 18,000 priests!
JOSEPH:
That’s like a once in a lifetime thing. And what an honor. To be only a few feet away from the veil separating him- from the Holy of Holies.
CHAYA:
No doubt, while there, Zacharias prayed to have a child.
MARY:
Well- their prayers were answered! Oh, another detail. After coming out of the Holy of Holies, Zacharias was unable to speak.
CHAYA:
Oh, how nice for Elizabeth. Given how Zacharius loves to blather on and on and on-
MARY:
I always loved to hear what Zacharius had to say. He always has so much wise advice. So, anyway, I was a bit sad that he was unable to talk.
CHAYA:
You were such a strange child.
JOSEPH:
(smirking a smile at Mary)
Well, it was nice to catch up. But I really should go now and start preparing for- both our wedding, and our journey! Then... as soon as we are married, we will set out for Bethlehem.
SCENE 6: temple study, at lower stage right
(Throne can be covered by a tarp. Several scrolls have been set on the table beside Annas, who is pouring over an opened scroll. Scribe enters. Watching him briefly, he strolls over to Annas.)
SCRIBE:
Annas, you are still here? It’s been weeks.
ANNAS:
And I will be at it for several more weeks. Or maybe even months. I don’t know. I intend to read everything.
(Scribe looks through all the scrolls.)
SCRIBE:
You surprise me. You are reading- the writings of Ezra, Nehemiah, and- Jonah? Are you planning to become a scribe? Or if not, you really only need to focus on the laws of Moses.
ANNAS:
You need not tell me that. If people did not see the High Priest obeying the laws-
(Scribe gives Annas a funny look. Annas quickly adds...)
ANNAS:
Or- any priest- for that matter- they- ah- ah-
(Scribe waits and wonders, then motions to himself)
SCRIBE:
No need to explain. As one who also functions as a lawyer, I know it is very wise to tread carefully when expressing one’s business and aspirations. I hear that you have visited the palace a few times. But if not the laws of Moses, you are obviously looking for something specific. You do know that as a scribe, I can help you. Besides thoroughly knowing every bit of the law, I do know all of these writings very well.
ANNAS:
As I have already said- I-ah- I-ah- I am looking- for-
(looking around to make sure they’re alone)
I need all information on the coming Messiah.
SCRIBE:
Curious.
ANNAS:
Please do not ask.
SCRIBE:
I won’t.
ANNAS:
(thinking)
Ah- but- well- perhaps I could use your help. I have been asked to look into this matter. Because, it would be wise, to make sure that our positions of authority will not be compromised- by someone who may come and claim to be Israel’s Messiah.
SCRIBE:
Of course. That would change the financial and working dynamics for everyone. For me, you, the king! I see-I see-I see... okay, let me think. You will not need any of these scrolls. Let us put these back, and we will take a look at the writings of Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and- definitely Micah. I believe we should also take a look at the Psalms, Jeremiah, Hosea, Zechariah, Malachi, as well as the second book of Samuel. Were you aware that there are even prophecies of the Messiah in the Torah? Everyone of them, except for Leviticus.
(While Scribe has been talking, he and Annas gently fold and collect the scrolls.)
ANNAS:
I was not aware. But very interesting... Thank you.
SCRIBE:
There will still be a lot to go through, but at least we do not have to travel anywhere for that worldwide census!
ANNAS:
Indeed. It is a blessing to be from the tribe of Levi, for more reasons than one.
(Annas and Scribe exit as Annas is still speaking.)
SCENE 7: stable with manger, at upper center stage
(From lower stage right, Dafna, the innkeeper’s wife, leads the way towards the stable. Mary and Joseph follow after, Mary fully showing and ready to deliver.)
DAFNA:
I’m so sorry. I apologize again for my husband’s reaction. Things have been extremely hectic. People have been flooding in for weeks now for this census-thing, as well as traveling through to the Holy City for the Feast of Tabernacles. It’s great for business, but I am completely exhausted, and so overwhelmed, you cannot imagine. And again, I’m also very sorry about all of this. I wish I could do more.
JOSEPH:
We understand. We tried every place in Bethlehem, and every inn was already completely filled up. You were our last-
(Dafna stops at the manger, and motions out with her arms.)
DAFNA:
Again, so sorry. This stable is really the only thing I can think of. I suppose it is better than nothing.
JOSPEH:
It is. And this means so much. Thank you. It truly is an answer to prayer.
DAFNA:
Answer to prayer?! I doubt my prayers would be for the same things.
(turning to Mary)
And in your condition. Poor sweet thing. And here I’ve been going on and on, complaining about things being difficult. Look at you. So, from where did you travel?
JOSEPH:
Nazareth.
DAFNA:
Nazareth! That would be a difficult journey without being pregnant! Poor sweet thing. I don’t know how else I can help.
MARY:
The Lord God will provide.
DAFNA:
Joseph and Mary. You are a strange couple. I mean, I can see that you love and care for each other very much. And you are very nice. But you are still quite strange.
(starting to leave but stops)
Oh! I will leave you this lamp.
(giving lamp to Joseph, then starts to leave)
Oh! How will you wrap the baby, when it comes?... I will find some rags. Clean rags. At the very least. I will be back as soon as I can. Oh! And- please, forgive me- my name is Dafna.
JOSEPH:
Thank you so much, again, Dafna.
DAFNA:
Such a strange couple.
(Mary and Joseph smile at each other.)
JOSEPH:
She kind of makes this feel a bit like home. She kind of reminds me of your mother’s friend.
MARY:
Oh! You mean, talkative? She really is a dear.
(As Mary tries stifling a laugh, she gasps from a contraction. She looks up at Joseph, pleased, but also scared. Joseph helps her to the ground behind the manger. Once lights are down in this area, Mary can pull the pre-wrapped baby doll from her costume to be read for the next scene.)
SCENE 8: Herod’s throne, at lower stage right
(Herod sits, as Annas enters while making his statement.)
ANNAS:
You summoned me.
HEROD:
I expected an update by now.
ANNAS:
I have not yet finished reading through all of the necessary scriptures.
HEROD:
You must know something about your Messiah, and the reasons behind all of that.
ANNAS:
Ah. Yes, of course...
HEROD:
You have to think about it?
ANNAS:
I am thinking about how to explain it all to you in easier terms. It is rather complicated.
HEROD:
Fine. Whenever you are ready, please proceed.
ANNAS:
As you perhaps know, God made a covenant with our forefather, Abraham, promising us land, seed and blessings. As well, God made another covenant with king David, promising him that his throne would be eternal. And one day, our Messiah will come, and He will sit on the throne, and fulfill all of those promises. Because of Him, there will be peace, we will be in full possession of our promised land, and becoming a big and powerful nation, we will be very fruitful and successful.
HEROD:
But, that would mean, when the Messiah arrives- whoever is on the throne at that time, will be removed, in one way or another.
(Annas doesn’t know what to say, so Herod continues.)
HEROD:
And was it not said that the Messiah could be coming very soon?
ANNAS:
According to the prophet Daniel, yes. It should be very soon.
HEROD:
Exactly when? And how? How will He come? How will you recognize Him? Will He simply appear, ready for war, riding in on a horse?
ANNAS:
This I do not know, yet. As I have explained, there is still a lot to read and study.
HEROD:
These are your scriptures. How do you not know this?
ANNAS:
We have never put much, if any, credence on a lot of these prophetic writings. As a Sadducean priest, we know the laws and writings of Moses, as these scriptures are practical. For the most part. And can be applied to everyday life, and they can be adhered to as well as enforced.
HEROD:
So, there might not be anything to all of these- prophecies?
ANNAS:
Many people have put their faith into this, one way or another. I personally do not understand. I simply believe in the law, and so, live by the law. It is what has brought me success and authority in life. And I will do whatever I can to protect and maintain that.
HEROD:
Good to hear that we agree on something so important. Although, just in case, you will still continue to read and study up on this potential issue?
ANNAS:
Yes. And- IF- all of this does come to pass, we will then, simply have to figure out what to do next.
HEROD:
I trust that you are keeping this business discreet?
ANNAS:
I have enlisted the help of a lawyer, a scribe, who knows these scriptures very well, and I know that we can trust him.
(Herod stands up and slowly paces, as Annas stands ready, as if expecting to be challenged.)
HEROD:
Hm. Well, at some point, I would like you to bring him here. Especially since this potential matter- could actually become very sensitive in nature. And if you happen upon anything that is seemingly urgent, please come to me at once.
(Herod speaks the last bit right into Annas’ face. Annas stands firmly stoic, nods and exits.)
SCENE 9: stable with manger, at upper center stage
(Mary sits on a hay bale, holding the baby. Joseph sits beside Mary stroking the baby’s face and smiling.)
JOSEPH:
If you are tired, I can take him for a while. You need to rest so you can regain some strength. Once your days of purification is done, we will have to make the journey to Jerusalem.
MARY:
You also need to rest.
JOSEPH:
We can lay Jesus here, in this feeding trough. He should be quite safe in there.
MARY:
(laughing gently)
You are so clever.
(stopping short)
Did you hear something?
(Mary and Joseph look at each other, quietly.)
JOSEPH:
I will go- see what it is.
MARY:
Please be careful.
(Mary hugs the baby closer as Joseph exits stage left for a few moments and then returns.)
JOSEPH:
Mary? Do you feel up for visitors?
MARY:
Visitors? Is it Dafna, again?
JOSEPH:
No. Shepherds- are standing outside waiting to see Jesus.
MARY:
What? Shepherds? I mean, how? I mean- yes, please, send them in.
(As Mary lays the baby down in the manger, Joseph goes to the edge of stage left and waves in the Shepherds, and goes to stand behind Mary. When the Shepherds see the baby in the manger, they immediately fall to their knees and bow their heads. Some of them wipe tears from their eyes. Mary looks back at Joseph, amazed at this reaction. Shepherd 1 looks up, amazed.)
SHEPHERD 1:
It is just as the angel said.
MARY:
Angel? You received a message from an angel?
(Joseph sits back down beside Mary, and both listen intently.)
SHEPHERD 1:
We were all just watching our sheep, like we do all the time, when suddenly, this angel appeared, and gave us the news- that- ah- now what exactly did the angel say?
SHEPHERD 2:
First, the angel told us not be afraid. Because, we were. You know, we don’t scare all that easily, but this was the first time we’ve ever seen or heard an angel.
SHEPHERD 1:
Exactly. And then, the angel said-
SHEPHERD 2:
Behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people-
SHEPHERD 1:
Including us, shepherds. Everyone. Can you imagine! Most people avoid us. Anyway- continue. He’s got the better memory for such things.
SHEPHERD 2:
So, the angel then told us that- today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
SHEPHERD 1:
And then, the sky was full of angels, lots of them, everywhere. Lit- up- the- sky! And they were saying-
SHEPHERD 2:
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth– peace among men with whom He is pleased.
SHEPHERD 1:
So, we had to come as soon as we could!
SHEPHERD 2:
And now I can’t wait to share this good news with everyone! Here He is, our Lord and Savior- has just been born. Right?! Our long-expected Messiah!
JOSEPH:
Indeed. The Lord God of love- in flesh.
(Mary rests her head on Joseph’s shoulder, while still staring at the baby.)
MARY:
Truly, love has come down- to all of us.
SCENE 10: Herod’s throne, at lower stage right
(Herod sits on his throne, stewing, deep in thought. He jumps up as Guard ushers in Annas and Scribe.)
ANNAS:
King Herod, I have brought my scribe here for you to meet, an established lawyer among the Sadducees, whose name is-
HEROD:
There’s no time. I hope you are now able to answer all of my questions. Magi from the east have just arrived. They entered our great city and are asking- for- the King of the Jews.
(Annas’ jaw starts to drop, in realization.)
SCRIBE:
Is that not what you call yourself?
HEROD:
(agitated with Scribe)
They claim that he has just been born.
ANNAS:
(cautiously hopeful)
I was not aware that you were expecting a child.
HEROD:
Not- mine-
(Annas starts to understand and holds out his hand for Scribe to keep silent.)
HEROD:
I was considering that all of this was nonsense, of course! Myths and old wives’ tales. With, perhaps, the possibility of some imposter coming along and trying to take my throne. But if this HAS happened, it must be stopped. This Messiah must be stopped. King of the Jews? I- am king of the Jews. And I will do whatever I can to keep my throne and my kingdom.
ANNAS:
This is disconcerting. For all of us!
HEROD:
That is why I will see to it that this misunderstanding is cleared up.
SCRIBE:
These magi- did they tell you anything else? Even a small detail may be extremely important to know.
HEROD:
They said- that they saw His star and have come to worship Him.
SCRIBE:
Did they say WHEN they saw the star?
HEROD:
I did not ask them that question. But I will. It seems like that would be an important thing to know. But, what do you all know? For instance, do the scriptures say anything about the location?
ANNAS:
Yes!?
(Annas looks at Scribe for help, and he steps forward.)
SCRIBE:
This is what has been written by the prophet Micah, “And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah, for out of you shall come forth a ruler who will shepherd my people of Israel.”
HEROD:
So, we shall find this baby in Bethlehem?
SCRIBE:
Well, that is what scriptures say, but- why would God do something so important, and not have us- not have the spiritual leaders of the nation- know about it? More than likely, this is someone who knows enough scripture, and is somehow using it, trying to undermine our authority.
(noticing Herod’s interest)
As well as take the throne away from you by claiming to be the rightful heir.
ANNAS:
But- there was a star. And in the Torah, in the book of Numbers, it talks about a star...
(thinking and reciting)
“A star shall appear from Jacob, a scepter shall rise from Israel, and shall smash the [forehead of Moab, and overcome all the sons of Sheth.”
HEROD:
Well, they SAID that they saw a star. Funny that I never did. Did YOU ever see this star?
SCRIBE:
I did not.
ANNAS:
I advise that we consider the possibility that someone is somehow making these prophecies look like they have come true. Therefore, we still need to find out when this so-called star first appeared. The baby- if this baby even exits- could be older now. And if so-
HEROD:
Agreed.
MARY:
Of course I forgive you.
(Mary and Joseph smile awkwardly at one another. Chaya balks again.)
CHAYA:
Just like that? What sort of marriage are you two going to have, anyway?

And if so-
HEROD:
Agreed.
(cleaning his throat grandly)
I will speak to these magi again. Alone. You may leave now. And please- tell the guard to send those men back in.
(Annas and Scribe exit. Eventually, Magi enter.)
MAGI 1:
Selah, O king. You have ascertained more information from your holy men regarding the prophecies?
HEROD:
I have. But first I must ask. Exactly when was it- that you first saw the star?
MAGI 1:
It was one year since the 15th day of Tishri.
HEROD:
And what makes you believe that this will lead you to this- king?
MAGI 2:
(bowing)
The prophecies that have been passed along- is being fulfilled. The times outlined by the prophet Daniel. As well as the words of the psalmist, saying “You have ascended on high, You have led captive Your captives; You have received gifts among men, even among the rebellious also, that the Lord God may dwell there. Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, the God who is our salvation. Selah.”
MAGI 1:
Selah! The King has been born. The allotted time has arrived.
HEROD:
Well- this is all very good to know. In fact, I myself would very much like to find Him, and- pay homage to Him.
MAGI 1:
As you allow us into your kingdom, we will continue seeking until we find Him.
HEROD:
Indeed, with my permission.
(thinking)
And as my- holy men- have just informed me- please, go to Bethlehem first, and search carefully. And when you have found this Child, I ask that you return and report it to me...
(thinking again)
So that I may go and worship Him, as well. So, you may leave now! In peace! And please do not forget– return with this information as soon as you are able.
(Herod looks pleased as Magi bow and exit. As soon as they are gone, Herod pounds the throne with an angry fist.)
SCENE 11: Mary and Joseph’s house, at lower stage left
(With cushions to sit on, Mary, who is showing about 5 months, plays a hand game with two-year-old Jesus as a Child. As Mary holds his hands, she claps them together while saying the poem.)
MARY:
One – two – I love you,
three – four – more and more –
five – six – seven – God in heaven,
eight – nine – ten – loves all men-
(Dafna calls out as she approaches from stage right, carrying a loaf of bread wrapped in cloth. Joseph enters from stage left to greet her.)
DAFNA:
Yooohoooo, I’ve got some bread for you.)
JOSEPH:
Dafna, please come in. Welcome.
MARY:
Of course you are welcome. You are like family to us!
DAFNA:
I brought you some bread, to help warm up your house. You cannot know how happy I am that you’re going to live here in Bethlehem, and you were able to find an actual house to live in. I am still rather embarrassed that I had to put you up in the stable. Not our finest moment. But– oh, here, I hope you enjoy the bread.
(Joseph takes the bread from Dafna and either sets it down on a low table, or exits to put it away.)
MARY:
Dafna, thank you so much. Please, sit. We haven’t seen you for a while. Someone here has missed you.
(Child can wave or smile up at Dafna.)
DAFNA:
Hi! Oh, I love you so much. But, I cannot stay long. My poor helpless husband needs to be fed as well. So, I will make sure to come another day when I have more time. I just wanted to pop in and see how you are all doing.
(Mary starts to get emotional.)
DAFNA:
Oh. Is something wrong? Was it something I said?
(Joseph is back. He shakes his head and waves his arms a little. Mary quickly collects herself, smiles and touches her slightly rounded stomach.)
DAFNA:
Ohhhh, another one on its way. Congratulations. I totally understand. You’re emotional, and you must be very tired, too. Say no more. I will get out of your way now, and let you rest.
(Dafna exits stage right. Meanwhile, filled with emotion, Mary sniffs again.)
MARY:
Sorry.
JOSEPH:
For what? I hear that having babies is not an easy thing.
MARY:
It’s not just that. I keep thinking that everything is going too smoothly. Like, we are almost due for something bad to happen. Does that sound crazy? I-know, I-know, God is with us, but-
(Dafna is suddenly rushing back on stage towards the house.)
DAFNA:
Yoohooooo, it’s Dafna, again. There’s- There are- men- on their way. Camels- servants- and everything. Follow me, quickly.
(Joseph looks at Mary, and motions for her to stay there with the Child, before rushing after Dafna.)
MARY:
(to Child)
I wonder what this is all about? I hope everything is okay.
(Child can calmly smile and hug Mary.)
MARY:
Whatever it is, we will be strong and courageous. We will TRY to be strong and courageous. Like Daddy always says. Well, exactly like what our heavenly Father has told us!
(Mary thinks for a second, then speaks more lightly, almost laughing.)
MARY:
Maybe it’s just more people here to see you. You know. Those shepherds are still very, very busy spreading the word of joy and good news. They just cannot help but talk about it.
(Joseph returns, with Magi following after, carrying treasures and gifts. Joseph approaches Mary, before the Magi catch up.)
JOSEPH:
(almost bewildered)
Mary! We have company.
MARY:
More townspeople sent by the shepherds?
JOSEPH:
Magi– who have come a long way- from the east-
MARY:
Magi? What are magi? I suppose we will find out.
(Mary looks at Child, curiously, as Joseph motions for the Magi to enter, and goes to stand behind Mary and Child. As soon as they see the Child, they place the gifts at the Child’s feet, and bow very low to the ground.)
MAGI 1:
Our Lord and Savior! Bless our Lord and Savior! Selah! Praise to our Lord and Savior! We humbly present these gifts before the King of the Jews, hoping it is enough.
MARY:
It is a lot.
MAGI 1:
There is more. We have told our servants to bring the rest into the back room.
JOSEPH:
This-this is very generous.
MAGI 2:
We feel that it is still not enough.
MARY:
You have come a long way? We have some fresh bread if you need.
MAGI 1:
Thank you, for your hospitability. We have come from the far east to see and worship the King of the Jews. This Child- the King of kings.
(Child can sit on Mary’s lap and just smile. Or if the Child is cooperative enough, he can go and tenderly hug each Magi and sit down in front of them.)
MAGI 1:
We had been waiting for a sign for many years. The prophecies have been handed down throughout many generations, to offer hope to the nations– this is the expected blessing for all nations. We saw His star and followed it to Jerusalem. We stopped there to let king Herod know why we were traveling through this country. And there we learned that your scriptures say we should look for Him in the town of Bethlehem. Once we left the city, we saw the star again, which brought such great joy to our hearts. The star led us right to this house.
MAGI 2:
The prophecy that has been passed along- is being fulfilled... “You have ascended on high, You have led captive Your captives; You have received gifts among men, even among the rebellious also, that the Lord God may dwell there. Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, the God who is our salvation. Selah.”
MAGI 1:
Selah!
MAGI 2:
And He deserves everything we have.
JOSEPH:
Your words remind us of what the priest and the prophetess told us when we brought Jesus to the temple.
(Mary tries to hide her concern. Magi 2 notices.)
MAGI 2:
We are most interested to hear the very words of God. What was the circumstance, and what were you all told.
JOSEPH:
According to the law of the Lord, eight days after His birth, the Christ-Child was circumcised. Thirty days after His birth, five shekels in silver was given to the temple to redeem our firstborn male, who is called holy to the Lord. And forty days after His birth, when my wife, Mary, had finished her days of purification, we brought our offering to the priest- at the doorway of the tent of meeting- to make atonement-
MARY:
And when the priest, whose name is Simeon, saw Jesus, he just knew- because of the Holy Spirit. And he was beyond excited- to hold the Christ-child in his arms and bless Him.
MAGI 2:
Please, tell us everything that this priest, Simeon, told you. These words that are surely of the Holy Spirit.
JOSEPH:
The priest said, “I have been looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit came upon me, and assured me that I would not see death before I had seen the Lord's Christ.” And, “Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes HAVE seen Your salvation, which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES, and the glory of Your people Israel.”
(The Magi “ah” at this last statement and nod, then hear Mary’s sigh, as she puts a hand to her forehead.)
MAGI 2:
Ah. Yes. As expected. There was more said.
JOSEPH:
Yes. Simeon went on to say, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed- and a sword will pierce even your own soul— to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
MARY:
This was upsetting to hear, because- I am just wondering- what does this all mean?
(Joseph puts a comforting arm around Mary’s shoulders.)
JOSEPH:
But let us remember that Simeon told us not to worry. Only fear the Lord. And-
MARY:
Be strong and courageous.
JOSEPH:
God will not fail us.
MAGI 1:
It is a great blessing to hear these testimonies. It only amplifies our faith, solidifies what we already believe, and encourages us to move onward.
JOSEPH:
There were quite a few people at the temple who had been fasting and praying for this time to come, and- for all that still needs to be accomplished. There was even a woman, a prophetess, who had dedicated seven years to fasting and praying.
MARY:
Anna! We got to meet her. And she got to meet Jesus. She was completely overjoyed, with praises, that Yahweh be glorified, because our salvation is here! The good news for all people.
JOSEPH:
Where our nation has failed, this One will bring all of us redemption.
MAGI 1:
Which reminds me, king Herod asked us to return to him, in order to tell him the exact location of the Child.
MARY:
King Herod- wants to come worship Jesus?
MAGI 2:
That is what he said. But God warned us in a dream- not to return that way. This Child is meant to do great things- and even though the Lord Jesus comes down in love- for all nations– we believe there will be many who hate Him, and will hate those who love Him.
MARY:
What shall we do?
JOSEPH:
(taking Mary’s hand in his)
God will guide and protect us, I am sure. And we- shall be strong and courageous.
SCENE 12: Herod’s throne, at lower stage right
(Herod paces in front of Annas and Scribe.)
HEROD:
It has been a while, and those magi have not yet returned to me as requested. I need to know, have any of you seen them? Have they sent any message at all? Perhaps to the temple instead of the palace?
SCRIBE:
Are you accusing us of something?
HEROD:
Since those men spoke of worshiping the baby, they might have gone to the temple, instead.
ANNAS:
No, no one has seen them, as far as I know. And if they would have come through, it would have been very obvious.
HEROD:
Well, as previously stated, this could be the Messiah, or this could be an imposter to take over as king. So, if you, along with someone else, thinks this is a way to overtake my throne and gain absolute authority, just keep in mind that treason is punishable by death.
ANNAS:
Trust me when I say, we are just as concerned about this matter as you are-
HEROD:
So, you have not heard any murmurings of any possible plots or threats?
ANNAS:
Perhaps you- we- have been tricked by the magi.
(catching Herod’s threatening glare)
But- if we hear anything, we will let you know immediately.
(While Herod paces, Scribe takes Annas aside.)
SCRIBE:
While the king has somewhat of a legacy, his suspicious nature could drive himself towards insanity. How closely are we going to work alongside him? He is, after all, allied with the Romans.
ANNAS:
We have little choice but to trust in our alliance with the king. And, if there really is a threat to our positions, there are only a few options. Let it happen. I think not. Or get blood on our hands. That can get messy very fast. Or- nurture and use a strong hatred towards any shared enemy of ours, and we can see to it that king Herod- does the dirty work for us.
(Scribe thinks about this and nods his agreement. Herod suddenly calls out.)
HEROD:
Guards!
(Annas and Scribe look up, concerned. Herod notices Annas and Scribe and addresses them with a head motion.)
HEROD:
You may leave. Just promise me that you will always stay alert and keep me posted if anything suspicious should happen.
(Annas and Scribe nod and exit as Guard enters, bows, then stands at attention.)
HEROD:
Send out my army. With orders to go to Bethlehem and search the entire village and area. Do not waste any time looking for this Christ-Child. Simply- have the soldiers kill every male baby under the age of two. Go! Immediately!
(balking at Guard’s slight hesitancy)
I will do whatever it takes to protect my kingdom. Whatever it takes. For myself, and my son, who will one day be king.
(Guard bows and exits. Herod heaves a heavy sigh.)
SCENE 13: Mary and Joseph’s house, at lower stage left
(Joseph enters from stage left with lantern in hand. Mary follows after him, speaking frantically, but trying to stay quiet.)
JOSEPH:
Sorry to wake you in the middle of the night.
MARY:
Joseph! What’s happening? What’s wrong? And please be quiet. You will wake up our Child.
JOSEPH:
We have to pack up and leave.
MARY:
What? Why?
JOSEPH:
You heard what the magi said about king Herod, and the dream that they had, warning them to return to their country another way?
MARY:
Yes, and we said that we are going to try to be strong and courageous, and let God guide us-
JOSEPH:
And He is. God just sent an angel to me- saying, “Get up!” So I got up.
MARY:
That was it? Can we not sleep just a little longer?
JOSEPH:
No, we are to flee to Egypt and stay there until God tells us.
MARY:
Egypt?! But that is so far away. And why Egypt?
JOSEPH:
Mary. You need to wake up and listen. King Herod is sending his army- here- right now. With the purpose- to find the Child- and- destroy Him.
MARY:
Okay. I am now wide awake. I just do not understand! How can there be so much hate– for One who is the very essence of love?
JOSEPH:
It is a difficult thing to understand.
MARY:
And- Egypt, with a child, and another on the way, and- h- how will we manage? You will be leaving yet another job-
JOSEPH:
Do you forget the treasures from the magi? We will use this to buy us safe passage, and find a place to live-
MARY:
Of course. Wow. Such timely provision. God is so good!
JOSEPH:
And God will make sure that we will be fine! So, we will be strong and courageous!
MARY:
(giving a resolute nod)
Because all things are possible with God!
(Joseph looks up in prayer, and Mary joins him.)
JOSEPH:
Selah! Thank You, Lord God for Your great love, Your provision, and keeping us safe thus far. Amen.
(Mary smiles and they both exit.)
SCENE 14: lower center stage
NARRATOR:
Joseph and Mary, with the Christ Child, remained in Egypt until the death of Herod. Then an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to let Joseph know it was safe to return to the land of Israel. As instructed, they went to live in the city of Nazareth– where the Child, Jesus, continued to grow, increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. All of this led up to His ministry, and His death on the cross for our sins, in order to bless the nations. To be our salvation. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
I will speak to these magi again. Alone. You may leave now. And please- tell the guard to send those men back in.
(Annas and Scribe exit. Eventually, Magi enter.)
